GunVault MiniVault, MultiVaultby Wiley Clapp California has a law which attempts to consign blame for children-with-guns accidents by making it a crime for a homeowner to leave a loaded gun unattended. While laws of this sort may in some ways be ill advised, their existence is very real -in California and elsewhere. Well, GunVault's GV1000 MiniVault and GV2000 MultiVault rapid-access handgun safes are means by which the concerned citizen may comply with both the letter and spirit of the law without reducing the chance of having a loaded handgun ready when needed. The GV2000 MultiVault is a 16-gauge steel box measuring 14x10x8 inches covered with a layer of tough polyethylene plastic; the compact GV1000 MiniVault measures 12x8x5 inches. Both units taper slightly in height to the rear. The access doors on both units work on sturdy, spring-loaded, full-length hinges. Inside there's a wedge-shaped cavity padded on both sides with foam rubber that is designed to hold a handgun in a consistent position relative to the opening. This makes rapid withdrawal of the handgun easy after a few practice draws. The safes are intended to be affixed to a stationary object or wall; mounting hardware comes with the units. In my view, the most likely location would have to be under a desk or table. Another good spot might be the area inside and above a closet door.
The outstanding feature on both units is the unlocking system: Push the four finger buttons in the combination you set and the door pops open.
Although there is a backup key locking system, the outstanding feature of the rapid-access safes is the unlocking system. On the top center edge of the unit adjacent to the door there's a recess shaped to accept four fingers of the user's outstretched hand. At the tip position for each finger there's a button. When the shooter lays his hand on the safe each finger is naturally positioned over a button. In the bowels of the box a battery-powered preprogrammed computer responds to finger pressure on the buttons. The user has the choice of some 40000 possible combinations, and programming the safe is easy. When the right sequence is pushed the door pops open. The button pad is directly above the door, and a downward swipe of the hand gets you to the butt of the handgun. With practice the hand movements become second nature. Combinations on the safe can be set as you choose and changed as frequently as you want. It's also interesting to note that the combination can be simplified. For example, you could use the same button four times as opposed to a sequence. In this sense it might be four fast touches on the index finger button and the door comes open. In the event you get confused about where you are the safe features Braille-type dots are each recess-one bump for the first button and so on. Complete easy-to-follow instructions are packed with each unit. A lot of carefull thought went into the locking arrangement. Getting to your handgun when it's secured in a GunVault safe is probably quicker than opening the handkerchief drawer on your bureau and fishing around for it-and the gun is far more secure against the possibility of use in the wrong hands.Getting to your handgun when it's secured in a GunVault safe is probably quicker than opening the handkerchief drawer on your bureau and fishing around for it. Handgun Security Chests
SecureBut reasonably portable with quick in-the-dark access! By D.K. Pridgen GunVault Speed and the ability to operate its locking system even in the dark are two of the primary pluses for the GunVault line of handgun security chests. While not quite as fast as a holster, contrary to their advertising, it's quick to open and still offers an excellent level of security for a firearm. GunVault shipped me one of their MultiVaults for evaluation. It's the larger of their two offerings, 14 by 10 by 8 inches high, that tapers to about 6 inches. Visualize a wedge of cheese, lying on its side, painted black and you've got a good idea of the shape. The body is made of 16 gauge steel, with a foam liner, and weighs in at almost 14 pounds. (The smaller version, the MiniVault, weighs in at 9 pounds.) A spring-loaded door, hinged at the bottom, slots in the base for securing the MultiVault, and a padded removable shelf completes the basic structure. The shelf doubles the number of handguns that can be stored inside, in an organized fashion that allows removal during a crisis. The interior will handle most handguns with reasonable barrel lengths. Jewelry and other valuables can be stored in the MultiVault, as well. Remove the shelf, and a smallish camcorder or other electronics will fit inside.
The heart of the GunVault offerings, and what makes them operable in the dark, is the "No-EyesTM" keypad. Mounted on the top of the box is a rubber-coated keypad, with elongated depressions shaped like the four fingers on the right hand. A sealed button is in each finger groove, along with raised dots numbering from 1 to 4. Press the buttons in the correct order, the door pops open, and you reach inside to retrieve your handgun. The opening is plenty large enough to make it easy to reach inside. The computer lock will operate for a year off of a set of batteries but, should it fail early or you forget the code, a key override is provided. About 40,000 possible combinations can be set on this lock.
The reduced dimensions of the MiniVault would probably make it easier to find a place to hide it, but the increased capacity of the MultiVault (3 or 4 full-sized handguns) will make it attractive to many. A bracket to allow attaching it to the frame of a bed is available. I tested the MultiVault extensively, both in the light and the dark, and found it to live up to my expectations.
